Loss on Ignition

As applied to chemicalanalyses, the loss in weight which results from heating a sample of material to a high temperature, after preliminary drying at a temperature just above the boiling point of water. The loss in weight upon drying is called “free moisture”; that which occurs above the boiling point, “loss on ignition.”
