API 936 Refractory Inspection Code - Application, Installation, Inspection, Testing & Repair

What is (API 936) about?

Refractory Personnel Certification Program will be based on testing candidates’ knowledge of API Recommended Practice 936, Refractory Installation Quality Control Guidelines. API Recommended Practice 936 provides guidelines for the installation quality control of monolithic refractory linings and may be used to supplement owner specifications.  The document includes material, equipment and personnel qualification requirements along with procedures and responsibilities for quality control inspection personnel.  Refractory quality is closely monitored based on the document’s defined procedures and acceptance criteria.

The purpose of the program is to provide third-party certification of refractory inspection personnel by examination.  The certification examination would cover, at a minimum, the following criteria defined by API Recommended Practice 936, “Refractory Installation Quality Control Guidelines – Inspection and Testing Monolithic Refractory Linings and Materials”:

What is API 936 about?

  • The American Petroleum Institute has developed the API 936 Refractory Personnel Certification Program to help the industry identify qualified refractory personnel. The Refractory Personnel Certification Program (RPCP) is an integral part and a logical addition to other Individual Certification Programs managed by API.

  • 3-Determine what is an applicator and identify the various material qualification needed in the installation, sample preparation and surface separation requirements of the refractory system.
  • 4-Recognize the responsibilities of personnel and list down the documentations needed in the material qualification of a refractory system
  • 5-Enumerate the various requirements & guidelines needed in the installation of the refractory system including the knowledge of detailed execution plan such as the design details & quality standards
  • 6-List gunite procedures and equipment including variables that affect gunite quality
  • 7-Employ the procedures of inspection including the job specifications, application standards & data collection procedures
  • 8-Identify the acceptance and rejection criteria for the inspection of the refractory system
  • 9-Develop an in-depth knowledge on the post-installation methods for refractory systems and be able to learn the applicable heating rates for various classes of refractories
